11 New York Fashion Week Winter 2019 Trends You Can’t Miss

We are chasing dreams day after day, month after month, and NYFW has been on my bucket list since I moved to LA 4 1/2 years ago. I live for a good fashion moment, and it truly is a way of expressing yourself or making a statement. This fashion week was full of surprises, and my heart was bellowing with eagerness to see what this year’s trends were made of from the experts themselves. Designers behind brands like Tom Ford, Alice and Olivia, Philipp Plein and so many more put months of tireless work to create a true collection of what is happening in history. We love couture and unique designs, but I flew all the way to the big city to discover the things I could rock daily. I searched for fashion that is functional for the on-the-go fashion babe like myself who has a killer closet with versatility, statement pieces and personal style. Here’s my complete list of New York Fashion Week Winter 19 trends you can’t miss- and that you can rock too!

Trenchcoats

Long, tailored floor-length coats that fly effortlessly behind you as you walk, can you imagine? If you’re looking to classy up, pair any outfit with one of these and we know you mean business. My trench coat is something I dreamt up while creating fashion inspo moodboards for my first NYFW, and J.ING delivered with nothing short of perfection. It can be styled casual to classy, to business to street style, and the attention to detail is impeccable- embroidery around the edge of the entire coat, chic buttons that flow with it and tailored exquisitely to my body type. Trench coats are so in, and they keep you warm while keeping it fashion!

Lingerie

This might be my favorite fashion trend of 2019. I love details that peek out of an OOTD (outfit of the day) like delicately crafted lingerie. I wear lingerie underneath anything sheer, low cut or like I did here as a bodysuit. It gives a look femininity and confidence. Layering is an open book with lingerie and it gives you another place to wear them other than the bedroom!

Suits

Women only wore skirts and dresses up until the late 1950s. It wasn’t modernized for women to wear pants at formal occasions until around 1964, and here we are in 2019 where girls rock pant suits on red carpets, to work and above all, to the iconic New York Fashion Week! Personally I’m obsessed with suits because they’re so comfortable, and this cashmere suit from ChillWorks is so comfortable it could pass as sweatpants.
I was working with ChillWorks to be dressed for an event night at fashion week, but when we arrived at the showroom in Soho, they also had a suit that fit Garrett like a glove! After styling, we couldn’t leave without capturing the dynamic duo in action. Unfortunately there wasn’t a photographer present to shoot us, but I never travel without my camera. An extra pair of willing hands from a beautiful NYC local lawyer was also checking out the showroom, I taught her how to use the camera and here were are! A full on, picture perfect photoshoot that is campaign worthy of being posted in Times Square. I couldn’t be more astonished about how stunning this turned out.

Belts

2019 has rolled up meaning business, and the female body has been celebrated to show off your best assets. Curves are in, cellulite is in, skinny is in, YOU is in. We are here for it, and I know that every girls closet needs at least one black belt they can pair with denim or to add shape and body to their waist for a dress, coat or jumpsuit. I added a belt to this suit set by ChillWorks to give it more femininity and show off my shape. If you’re wondering what black belt to buy, the best affordable belt is on amazon for literally $14, or if you want to splurge a little more for an essential that you’ll pair with everything, grab the 1 inch Gucci belt that you see every blogger wearing.

Matching Sets

Like a jumper, matching sets are the epitome of easy outfits. You don’t have to overthink them or over accessorize. When I rock sets, I just throw it on, add a pair of shoes and bag and you look perfectly put together. I rocked my set shopping around Soho and got tons of compliments, especially because denim is a classic staple and a MUST in my personal closet.

Animal Prints

Speaking of compliments, these snake skin print shoes from Shoedazzle ($59) got me so many compliments! Who needs designer when you can snatch these trendy heels? Along with snakeskin, I think we’ve all seen leopard print creeping back into our wardobe- and really I’m not mad about it at all. If you’re really feeling confident, NYC has taken this animal print fashion trend up a level by doing a print on print. It can be a lot, but hey fashion has no rules right?

Faux Fur

Before I get into the adorable fur jacket trend that is resurfacing, I want to celebrate the fact that LA has BANNED the distribution and selling of real animal fur. It will go into effect in 2020, so us cruelty free animal lovers can shop at ease without having to double check the labels. If you’re one of the idiots that still think fur should be sold, please watch this video and educate yourself.
ANYWHO, I am lovinggggg this abdominal snowman inspo with the white fuzzy coats, and I personally own 4 faux fur jackets because I love the trend so much. I would say that the teddy coat can also fall under this trend as it is streaming every celebrity, influencer and fashion gurus closet like a storm. Since this blog is for the functional fashion-forward babe, I would definitely add this to your closet STAT for the winter/spring to stay looking fresh and keeping warm.

Pops of Color

NEON IS IN! I’m sure you already know bc Kylie Jenner pretty much set this trend, but really I’m confident most of us need to steer from the all-black closet at some point. This is an amazing opportunity to grab some statement pieces that you love and will wear again! Neon doesn’t mean go full on highlighter, but instead style yourself as you typically would, then throw in one POP of color. Trust me, it will serve you compliments all night!
I bought these knee high boots originally for $30 in DTLA for Halloween last year, and this jacket is actually a suit dress from ASTR that I opened to add flare to the basic black jumper from NBD. This was easily my most important outfit for NYFW because I was on a panel to be interviewed (go watch on my IG stories!), and I wanted to be: classy but not overdressed, trendy but not street style, put together but not too try hard. I was really struggling! But when I finally paired 3 basics, I felt perfect!! It’s all up to your personal taste to go all out or not at all, but I love a balance of classy and trendy. When you’re at an important event I feel it’s always best to stick to the classy side!

Knee High Boots

The runways at NYFW were filled with knee high boots! Functional meets fashion because these babies keep your thighs toasty warm during the winter and I love how they complete an outfit like no other shoe. Depending on how cold your winter is, I love wearing knee high boots with black tights, a mini skirt and a long sleeve blouse for a super cute date night outfit or so. You can pair them like I did with a jumper, with regular denim to dress it up a little or with a mini dress.

Statement Outfits

Lady Gaga holds the trophy for some of the most iconic statement outfits, and I think she is to credit for rocking anything statement in 2019. While watching the models on the runway in NYC, I noticed each designer really had statement outfits that you wouldn’t wear on the reg; instead they were made for a red carpet, event, bday party or holiday fit. I loved how they made me stop and really look into details at what it took to pair the overall vibe.
I wore my statement outfit to go to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time. As we were taking the long journey to the middle of the bridge, I felt eyes searching every little detail of my outfit just like I was watching the models on the runway. This statement outfit is totally ME, a mix of street style, a little flirty and a lot of fun. The LBD underneath is Luxe Fashion Label, and I belted it with detachable overalls from another outfit of mine. I loved how it was different, unique, and something I’d never seen a girl wear before. My shoes are Topshop and to really make sure I was making a statement, I combined it all with the fur coat trend.

Boyfriend Jeans.jpg

Boyfriend Jeans

We all remember the time when skinny jeans were pretty much the cutest thing a girl could wear out. I still rock skinny jeans, but really I am rejoicing over the huge impact boyfriend jeans have had on this generation. We aren’t just talking denim, were talking cargo pants, joggers and pant suits that are loose, comfy, and absolutely perfect for day wear. To avoid looking like a potato sack (unless that’s what you’re going for) match boyfriend jeans with a belt or a tight top to show off your body. I love to follow the one tight/one loose garment style guide so it’s not overly sexy or a little too potato-sacky.
If I chose a favorite 2019 trend outfit from my NYFW visit, I would easily say this one wins. Its casual, classy, statement, street style and sexy all in one. These jeans are a level up from basic denim, and the most complimented item of my fashion week.

Turtlenecks

A basic essential that should be in every girls closet is a black turtleneck. NYFW was dripping with turtlenecks high and low, and if you really want to hit the trend on the head get a cropped t-neck to show a little skin. This top trend can basically pair with anything. It can be dressed up, dressed down, sexy or street style, add jewelry or keep it basic. The world is your oyster really with this classic piece, and even more-so that it’s one of the top fashion trends of 2019.
